The Stages of the Twin Flame Union

The different stage that you are in

with your twin flame.

As we all know, A Twin flame relationship is not all ‘perfect’, as one might expect, especially in the beginning (usually a few years)

After reading or hearing about twin-flames and their perfectly balanced energies, many people think it would be like a fairy tale,
the you-find-your-twin flame-and-live-happily-ever-after kind of thing.

It is not.

It is a perfect relationship, but it needs some work from both the partners.

Twin flames are two souls (people) who were created in the beginning from one single soul unit with male and female aspects together. This singular soul unit was a unified energy sphere of male and female, that split into two souls creating the twin souls.

A soul is made of energy much like electricity and is in essence a blue flame. 

This is why they are called twin flames. 

Each of these two souls after the split was a new and complete soul. 
Just as cells divide and become new complete cells, or a hologram is cut into pieces and each has the entire picture within it, identical to the original picture. 
Each soul has all the things necessary to be a complete functioning soul. 

The souls were polarized, one embodying mostly the male energy and one mostly the female energy of the original sphere. Each also retains a part of the other within them. They may be different on many levels, but on many other levels they are also exactly the same.
The yin and yang symbol is one of the best illustrating this with each side holding a small dot of the other.

There are, as I see It, Seven Main Phases of a Twin Flame Relationship.
Everyone understands the twin flame relationship differently… and there are no clear timelines or specific periods for any of these phases.
Each differs for every twin flame couple.
I’m giving you this information so that you can understand this relationship better.
There are no rules. And there is no One-size-fits-all in a Twin flame relationship.
Each relationship will be unique, just like each couple.


In the pre-phase, The Preparation, this phase comes BEFORE you meet your twin flame. It is very much a part of your Twin flame relationship.

What happens in this phase: 

– Karmic Relationships
There are one or few seriously devastating relationships. These begin with strong emotions and end painfully. These are called Karmic relationships.

– Emptiness and Strong desire for ‘The One’
After you’ve been through the Karmic relationships, you’ll have a very deep yearning or desire to find ‘The One’.
At this point you will desire meeting your perfect love, whose image you will carry in your imagination (or in some cases in Dreams).
This Image is of your Twin flame, although you probably won’t realize it at this point.

This happens because your soul knows your Twin flame is coming!


Stage One: Recognition and Awakening

This stage is simply the Ah-Hah moment of realizing the twin flame experience even exists. This can happen with one or both twins simultaneously, or at separate times. But this moment can not occur without these two souls meeting in this physical world. So this will often happen on a first date, or a chance meeting such as in the grocery store or at your Nona’s 90th birthday party. You leave the first date or chance meeting feeling like the other person spent the entire time finishing your sentences. There are a lot of little things that happen that seem like the strangest coincidences.

Psychologist Carl Jung termed those things “synchronicities” which literally means, meaningful coincidences. I may have already shared the story of the girl who went on a date after 50 bad ones and told her girlfriend beforehand that if this guy didn’t know who Plato was, she was done with dating for forever by the appetizer. So you can imagine her surprise when her date asked her over appetizer’s if she was familiar with Plato’s “Form and Function Theory”. When these synchronicities occur, and the twins recognize something special is happening, the heart chakras open simultaneously and will continue to be so during this physical lifetime.

Note that I did not say they will remain together for this lifetime, but you will be spiritually and emotionally bound to your twin in this lifetime from the moment your heart chakra opens to them, until your last breath here. Fret not however, now that you have found your twin you will get to explore as many lifetimes with them as you want after this wonderful experience. The purpose of this stage is not to seal a union that lasts forever, but merely to establish that such union exists, and to awaken you both to this possibility of exceptional and unconditional love.

Characteristics of Stage 1: Both Twins recognize one another at the soul level and feel as if they have met before.  Synchronious events surround the union.  The heart chakras open and both souls quickly merge into a third unified energy.  Both Twins experience an acceleration of spiritual understanding.

The purpose of the Recognition and Temporary Spiritual Awakening Stage: To activate the memory of each soul’s life mission and to help awaken each Twin to higher levels of consciousness.

Stage Two: The Test

In this stage, the honeymoon period of the relationship is over.
While there is still much swooning over each other, the Self begins to emerge within each personality, and within each twin. There is less and less “us” and “we” conversations, and more and more “I” conversations from one or both twins. In many cases this is when the other twin begins to fret, because they are twins and can feel this pulling away. This would be the time when pressure to commit, or establish what society considers a conventional relationship such as marriage or engagement would be broached. Conflict is inevitable because this is the test. Both twins are being forced to evaluate what their love is, and what it should be.

The primary purpose of this stage is to test the commitment level of both twins on the validity of this unconditional love. So there will be a lot of past pain cropping up with both twins, and both will have to deal with it individually in their own unique ways, according to their own unique purpose. See, even though both twins are heading in the same direction as far as love is concerned, they both each have their own individual lives, karmic paths, and journeys to follow. Clean karmic paths will be required for both twins.
This test then will be for the twins to learn individually, while simultaneously.
What karmic housekeeping needs to be done?

Characteristics of Stage 2: The initial temporary spiritual awakening (illumination) fades. The ego (“little self”) begins to re-emerge.  One or both Twins may attempt to fit the relationship into the “old model” of Love, couplehood and relationship as it relates to their ego desires and learned belief system.  Inner conflict arises.  Twins ruminate on what they were taught to believe their beloved “should be” and how relationships are supposed to serve them. Both Twins feel simultaneously inspired and toppled by the power of the union. Doubts creep in making one or both Twins begin to view their beloved critically or suspiciously.

The purpose of the Testing stage: To cause outdated mental concepts about relationships to rise to the surface to be cleared.


Stage Three: The Crisis

The crisis stage is an uncomfortable one, not going to lie. At this point, one or both of the twins realizes that their karmic housekeeping needs a LOT of work. Or all of a sudden those synchronicities stop coming, or their faith is tested, or any amount of life crises could hit them all at once and suddenly love is the last thing they can think about.
This stage is ripe with fear and anxiety for both twins. Remember, one always feels what the other is feeling. Dreams will become nightmares, and you may even communicate with each other through your dreams. Information that you are too afraid to leave with each other until this time will be revealed by each other in your dreams as well. In this stage, fear takes precedence and is very seldom fought through. It eventually leads to a crisis and a turning point, and often the first of many breakups for this couple. The purpose of this stage then is for both twins to individually take stock of their role in the making and the breaking of the unconditional love bonds.

During this stage is when both realize those bonds can’t be broken, and most twins realize that they can’t live without the other. That’s another reason why this stage can be so painful. The living without each other is inevitable, and important part of the process, but some may not even want to ever see this person again, but they know when this crisis occurs that there will probably be nothing they can even do to stop that. It’s a heavy feeling to realize you are with your twin flame when life just isn’t convenient for you to do so. So the purpose of this stage is to experience the level of pain required to understand deep love. The upside? If you didn’t hurt this badly, enough for two people experiencing heartbreak at the same time, then it wouldn’t be a soul connected and destined love.

Characteristics of Stage 3: The crisis of the Twin is realizing they must reject their egoic beliefs about Love relationships or reject their beloved.  Having to shed “little self” or identity-based beliefs and desires to embrace a higher expression of Love can lead to stubbornness and anxiety.  Fear can take hold, triggering many dysfunctional emotional patterns.  In staying present with the patterns, they can be witnessed and released. Despite fears, both Twins naturally come together in cycles for bonding, confession, forgiveness and Lovemaking.  These rituals cement higher levels of consciousness into the energy fields of both Twins.

The purpose of the Crisis stage: To provide opportunities for the healing and maturing of the mental and emotional bodies.


Stage Four: The Running Stage

And here we have one of the most common stages of them all, and one that most people that have identified their twin can identify with. Many people confuse this stage with the crisis stage, but the running stage can not occur without the crisis first. This will certainly feel like a crisis point for both twins however, although they both have been feeling the pinch of this union for some time. In this stage, one twin can’t handle it and runs. The ego is fearing annihilation here with the thought of a possible union, it can look like commitment phobia, emotional unavailability, there are a lot of terms for this experience. For the twin that runs, a deep seeded pain rises up, and many of their worst emotions do as well. Anger, punishment, defiance, defensiveness, judgement, and the most painful one of all, resistance.

Best case scenario here is that only one twin is feeling these things, but likely both are flooded with this emotional hurricane. This eventually leads one or both of them to withdraw from the other, which in turn, causes one to chase the other, an equally painful experience as they are met with unrelenting resistance. The purpose of this stage then is to teach both twins that Universe is in command here, and it is time to put it in the hands of the Higher Powers, and not…try so hard to control our destiny. This stage is not successfully completed until both twins have come to this awareness. For some, it may not happen in this lifetime, for others, it happens very quickly. Each twin has their own unique path. The quickest way to get through this stage, is to release judgement, also the most difficult way. Remember that your twin feels what you feel and think, so you need to release judgement if you want them to come back. If they feel your anger or resentment, they will stay away, because unconditional love is what makes this union work.

Characteristics of Stage 4: The human ego naturally fears annihilation in the face of the Unified Consciousness encoded inside the Twin Flame Union.  The pain body rises up and old ego survival mechanisms or “bottom of the barrel” emotional and mental patterns like defiance, resistance, manipulation, anger, punishing and judgment arise. One or both Twins become emotionally and mentally flooded with deep pain from what feels like soul-level rejection and abandonment.  The unbearable soul-level pain leads one or both Twins to withdraw physically and block communication in fear and futility. One or both Twins may unsuccessfully try to re-create the original unified harmony.

The purpose of the Runner Dynamic: To propel both individuals towards God for healing and maturation of the spiritual body.

NOTE:  The temptation to engage in ego battle or withdrawal is very seductive and difficult for many to resist, which is why many Twins never reach Surrender, Radiance or Harmony. Remember, there is no room for judgment in Twin Soul pairings. Each soul learns from much walking its own path and choosing through its own will.  Your non-attached loving thoughts will be felt by your beloved in the subconscious, keeping them strong.


Stage Five: The Surrender

Here comes the moment of respite for many twins, and the first that has been experienced in a while. This is the letting go and surrender stage, and although it sounds painful, it is very liberating. This stage is commemorated by The Hanged Man in the Tarot, where sacrifice to let go will yield positive results. In The Lovers we also must make a choice with effects that will last us this lifetime. If you are in this stage, you will navigate it successfully by letting your fears and judgement go to the Higher Powers, and allow them to control your destiny. Chasing the runner will work against you as you learned in the previous stage.

Now it is time to release the pain and the agony to the powers that can handle and manage it better than you can. This gives room for unconditional love to grow. Both twins must accept that what is destined will be no matter what. The runner is given the freedom and space they need to work through their own stuff, and the angels and guides and higher powers of the Universe get to work on behalf of both parties. Compassion returns, and the runner feels this liberated twin and…runs back. Eventually. Not yet, but this surrender begins this powerful healing process. 
The purpose of this stage is to allow you to release that human ego, and embrace the potential of the divine and the destined.

Characteristics of Stage 5: The direction and outcome of the relationship is surrendered to God in full faith and trust that the Union is under Divine Protection.  It is accepted that what is best and destined for the final physical harmonizing will transpire in its own time. (Both Twins must reach Illumination in order to harmonize in the physical.)

The “Runner” Twin is allowed the space and freedom to choose to evolve at their own pace in their own way. At this stage, the frequency of compassion returns and maintains itself.  The Surrendered Twin holds a heart space for their beloved while fully exploring life on the way to becoming an Illuminated human.  This may be a time of channeling Unconditional Love into art, music, writing, teaching, active service or some other creative outlet.

Purpose of the Surrender stage: To help each soul release the ego, develop regular communication with God and demonstrate their full trust in God to do what is best and when.


Stage Six: The Illumination

In this stage the human ego dies completely and the Divine force and destined events begin to occur. Each of the twins will experience an awakening that is even more powerful than their first meeting. All is validated at this stage, and the light of divine and unconditional love becomes radiated from them both. Opportunities occur that put them in each other’s paths again, and the energy of reunions begins to transpire. Here you experience things like that, “What was I thinking to run away from her” experiences, as both twins experience their own individual Ah Hah moments that light up their spiritual and romantic paths. The only purpose of this stage is to get that flow of unconditional love moving again, for both twins, to set the stage for the final and most beautiful stage of them all.

Characteristics of Stage 6: The ego or “little self” dies and the God-force energy takes over the body.  This leads to a complete spiritual awakening, arriving at one’s fully awakened divinity. This is the stage of radiating Divine Love rather than seeking romantic Love.

At this stage, the surrendered Twin’s emotional, mental and spiritual bodies arrive at full maturity.  New creativity and healing abilities arise, which are put in service to assist others.

Purpose of the Radiance stage:
To establish an outward flow of Divine Love through one’s body and works, which vibrates at a level that uplifts humanity.


Stage Seven: The Harmonization

Many people call this stage the reunion stage. I like to call it the harmonization stage, because soul connections with the Tarot are often associated with Tarot cards that embody the number 6, the number of harmony. Balance is restored and both twins have successfully accomplished all of their karmic tasks and lessons, and both are awakened to the infinite possibilities of this incredible love. A physical coming together occurs and this new energy unifies both to merge yin and yang to create a third unified soul body.
The soul purpose of this stage is to reunite the twins, and make them harmonious with the infinite waves of unconditional love. There is no more work to be done, but just the work of life and love from this plane to the next.

Characteristics of Stage 7: By this stage both Twins have awakened.  They come together in the physical to assimilate their newly evolved energies, flowing into the new dynamic of their Unified Potential.  Both Twins integrate fully into the third energy of Unconditional Love in a way that influences others towards their own heart opening.

Purpose of the Harmonizing stage:
To fulfill the intended mission of the Twin Flame Union.
