Plato's Allegory of the Cave - "The Island"

Basically, there are prisoners in a dark cave, they are chained and can only see shadows on a wall. To them, the shadows are the truth, because that is all they know, they don't realize they are just a shadow of objects that people are holding up against the light of a fire.

A prisoner escapes and makes his way out of the cave - when he sees the sunlight for the first time it hurts his eyes and he runs back into the cave. But after a while his eyes adjust and he goes back out again. He realizes how beautiful the light is. He begins to realize the cave was not the reality - not truth, but that the light is what is actually beautiful and real.

The point - that is what living in society is like. If we choose to believe everything people of authority & power tell us, if we accept what we read in the paper or on TV as being the truth, guess what - we're one of those prisoners chained in the cave.

Have you seen 'The Island'?

Now THAT's Platos Allegory of the Cave.
That is EXACTLY how the world is.
And we are all LINCOLN 6 ECHO (Ewan McGregor)
You absolutely couldn't explain it more succinctly.

So many injustices in this world will never be first and foremost for government, media etc.

This is 2013 and we still have slavery, child abuse, rampant violence against women, hunger, homelessness etc.
Why?
Because too many of us are content to stay chained down in that cave, believing what those with power and money want us to know.
