“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

"April 23rd. In the chambers of a regal old university in the Latin Quarter of Paris, former-president Theodore Roosevelt speaks to an enraptured crowd. Despite the Old-World majesty of the venue, the subject of the lecture is distinctly furiously modern, outlining what it means to be a participant in a strange experiment called “democracy.”

While his “Citizenship in a Republic” address touched on everything from labor to leisure, inequality to innovation, one section of his nearly 9,000-word speech was so powerful and profound as to stand out above all else. 

Roosevelt doesn’t tell us that the people dissecting our efforts are cruel or cowardly (though they sometimes are).
He doesn’t tell us that they’re wrong (they often aren’t).

What he does tell us is that it ultimately doesn’t even factor into things.
It’s not just that the game looks different from the field than from the bleachers,
It’s that without someone sweating and striving,
there wouldn’t be any game at all.

Criticism – constructive or destructive, sabotaging or sincere – will by its very nature always come second. The minute we start to frame our efforts around that truth is the minute we start liberating ourselves. The here-and-now is what counts because the here-and-now is all there is. That attitude allows us to focus on our efforts, not people’s potential reactions to them. It lets us grapple with the situation as it confronts us, not from the perspective of people up in the nosebleeds.

Yes, the haters are going to hate – there’s no way around it. But the haters aren’t going to exist without us first doing something to piss them off, so why not do so on our own terms?
  
Pain is the Process
Though Roosevelt calls on us to have the courage to start, he doesn’t waste any time warning us that every endeavor comes with a cost. We’re used to hearing that there’s no victory without struggle but what “Man in the Arena” tells us is that there’s no attempt without a struggle. 
Success is not guaranteed – sacrifice is.

Strange as it might sound, it’s still something worth striving for.

Frequently, we treat adversity as a sign that we’re doing something wrong when, in reality, it’s often the clearest sign that we’re doing something right. 
  1. It means we’re pushing ourselves beyond the limits of our current skillset. 
  2. We’re venturing into the wilderness beyond the borders of our comfort zones. 
  3. We’re consciously and deliberately placing ourselves in situations where our character and values are actually being tested (which is the only time we’ll ever know if they really hold true). 

Simply stated: 
if we step into the ring and don’t find ourselves challenged (and knocked on our asses), we’re in the wrong weight class.

At the same time that we’re putting criticism (real or imagined) out of our heads, we should be replacing it with the expectation of adversity. When it comes, we’re not going to be caught off-guard or broken by it. We’re given the desperately-needed chance to toughen ourselves in advance. Yes, the hurt will still be there, but it will be all the more bearable with the knowledge that pain isn’t pointless. It will pass more quickly as we acknowledge that it means we’re challenging ourselves. When the dust settles, it will leave us not only standing but even stronger than before – ready to struggle again.

Defeat Beats Inaction
Fail big or go home.

That’s the final challenge we’re left with by “Man in the Arena.” 
Not to strive over and over because our persistence will pay-off eventually, but because the act of straining and fighting is all it really takes.
  
As much as we’re told that winners write the history books, it’s the losers who often earn the world’s admiration. 
We can name the leaders of botched revolutions and uprisings. 
We can trace the trails left by explorers who never found what they were searching for. 
We can cite the men and women whose best endeavors turned into absolute catastrophes. 
Failed bobsled teams and botched moon missions, lost Antarctic voyages and last-stands against oppression.

Despite their defeats, we celebrate these people as heroes. 
Why?
Because they were there.


Once more, that message is particularly powerful at this exact moment in history. 
It’s not that the projects ahead of us are uniquely brutal (we’re probably not canoeing down a malarial tributary or facing off with a literal warrior in a coliseum) – it’s that the sidelines have never been more comfortable.  At no point in history have there been more distractions, diversions, and justifications to keep us from the challenges we could be facing.
  
  
Whether it’s a creative project, a new job, or even the lifelong battle for a healthier body, it’s the ambition, commitment, and courage to actually try that distinguishes us. 
How do you tell the athletes from the spectators? 
Not by who’s sporting the team colors. Not by who’s roaring the loudest. Not by who’s the strongest person there or even the most experienced or the person with zero points 
It’s who’s actually on the field, in the dust and the sweat and blood, instead of up in the bleachers. 
  
Stepping into the arena. Being there.

That’s all that matters. That’s all it takes.

"I remember how my life’s work developed from the time when I was very young. When I was about 25 years I used to live in utmost seclusion in the solitude of an obscure Bengal village by the river Ganges in a boat house.

The wild ducks which came during the time of autumn from the Himalayan lakes were my only living companions, and in the solitude I seem to have drunk in the open space like wine overflowing with sunshine, and the murmur of the river used to speak to me and tell me the secrets of nature …

And I passed my days in the solitude dreaming and giving shape to my dream in poems and studies and sending out my thoughts to the Calcutta public through the magazines and other papers. You can well understand that it was a life quite different from the life of the West.

I do not know if any of your Western poets or writers do pass the greatest part of their young days in such absolute seclusion. I am almost certain that it cannot be possible and that seclusion itself has no place in the Western world …

And my life went on like this. I was an obscure individual—to most of my country men in those days. I mean that my name was hardly known outside my own province, but I was quite content with that obscurity, which protected me from the curiosity of the crowds.

And then came a time when my heart felt a longing to come out of that solitude and to do some work for my fellow human being and not merely give shapes to my dreams and meditate deeply on the problems of life, but try to give expression to my ideas through some definite work, some definitive service for my fellow beings …

And the one thing, the one work which came to my mind was to teach children. It was not because I was specially fitted for this work of teaching, for I have not had myself the full benefit of a regular education. For some time I hesitated to take upon myself this task, but I felt that as I had a deep love for nature I had naturally love for children also.

My object in starting this institution was to give the children of men full freedom of joy, of life and of communion with nature. I myself had suffered when I was young through the impediments which were inflicted upon most boys while they attended school and I have had to go through the machine of education which crushed the joy and freedom of life for which children have such insatiable thirst. And my object was to give freedom and joy to children of men …

And so I had a few boys around me, and I taught them, and I tried to make them happy. I was their playmate. I was their companion. I shared their life, and I felt that I was the biggest child of the party. And we all grew up together in this atmosphere of freedom. The vigour and the joy of the children, their chats and songs filled the air with a spirit of delight, which I drank every day I was there.

And in the evening during the sunset hour I often used to sit alone watching the trees of the shadowing avenue, and in the silence of the afternoon I could hear distinctly the voices of the children coming up in the air, and it seemed to me that these shouts and songs and glad voices were like those trees, which come out from the heart of the earth like fountains of life towards the bosom of the infinite sky …

And it symbolized, it brought before my mind the whole cry of human life, all expressions of joy and aspirations of men rising from the heart of Humanity up to this sky. I could see that, and I knew that we also, the grown-up children, send up our cries of aspiration to the Infinite. I felt it in my heart of hearts.

In this atmosphere and in this environment I used to write my poems of Gitanjali, and I sang them to myself in the midnight under the glorious stars of the Indian sky. And in the early morning and in the afternoon glow of sunset I used to write these songs till a day came when I felt impelled to come out once again and meet the heart of the large world."

Bob Dylan Discurso de Aceitação do Prémio Nobel da Literatura de 2016





Sete meses após ter sido distinguido com o Nobel da Literatura, Bob Dylan entregou o discurso de aceitação e já pode receber o prémio de 820 mil euros.
O músico tinha até dia 10 de Junho para entregar o discurso de aceitação e receber o prémio com que foi distinguido.
Fala de "Moby Dick", "Odisseia" e Buddy Holly.

Nobel Lecture

"When I first received this Nobel Prize for Literature, I got to wondering exactly how my songs related to literature. I wanted to reflect on it and see where the connection was. I'm going to try to articulate that to you. And most likely it will go in a roundabout way, but I hope what I say will be worthwhile and purposeful.

If I was to go back to the dawning of it all, I guess I'd have to start with Buddy Holly. Buddy died when I was about eighteen and he was twenty-two. From the moment I first heard him, I felt akin. I felt related, like he was an older brother. I even thought I resembled him. Buddy played the music that I loved – the music I grew up on: country western, rock ‘n' roll, and rhythm and blues. Three separate strands of music that he intertwined and infused into one genre. One brand. And Buddy wrote songs – songs that had beautiful melodies and imaginative verses. And he sang great – sang in more than a few voices. He was the archetype. Everything I wasn't and wanted to be. I saw him only but once, and that was a few days before he was gone. I had to travel a hundred miles to get to see him play, and I wasn't disappointed.

He was powerful and electrifying and had a commanding presence. I was only six feet away. He was mesmerizing. I watched his face, his hands, the way he tapped his foot, his big black glasses, the eyes behind the glasses, the way he held his guitar, the way he stood, his neat suit. Everything about him. He looked older than twenty-two. Something about him seemed permanent, and he filled me with conviction. Then, out of the blue, the most uncanny thing happened. He looked me right straight dead in the eye, and he transmitted something. Something I didn't know what. And it gave me the chills.

I think it was a day or two after that that his plane went down. And somebody – somebody I'd never seen before – handed me a Leadbelly record with the song "Cottonfields" on it. And that record changed my life right then and there. Transported me into a world I'd never known. It was like an explosion went off. Like I'd been walking in darkness and all of the sudden the darkness was illuminated. It was like somebody laid hands on me. I must have played that record a hundred times.

It was on a label I'd never heard of with a booklet inside with advertisements for other artists on the label: Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, the New Lost City Ramblers, Jean Ritchie, string bands. I'd never heard of any of them. But I reckoned if they were on this label with Leadbelly, they had to be good, so I needed to hear them. I wanted to know all about it and play that kind of music. I still had a feeling for the music I'd grown up with, but for right now, I forgot about it. Didn't even think about it. For the time being, it was long gone.

I hadn't left home yet, but I couldn't wait to. I wanted to learn this music and meet the people who played it. Eventually, I did leave, and I did learn to play those songs. They were different than the radio songs that I'd been listening to all along. They were more vibrant and truthful to life. With radio songs, a performer might get a hit with a roll of the dice or a fall of the cards, but that didn't matter in the folk world. Everything was a hit. All you had to do was be well versed and be able to play the melody. Some of these songs were easy, some not. I had a natural feeling for the ancient ballads and country blues, but everything else I had to learn from scratch. I was playing for small crowds, sometimes no more than four or five people in a room or on a street corner. You had to have a wide repertoire, and you had to know what to play and when. Some songs were intimate, some you had to shout to be heard.

By listening to all the early folk artists and singing the songs yourself, you pick up the vernacular. You internalize it. You sing it in the ragtime blues, work songs, Georgia sea shanties, Appalachian ballads and cowboy songs. You hear all the finer points, and you learn the details.

You know what it's all about. Takin' the pistol out and puttin' it back in your pocket. Whippin' your way through traffic, talkin' in the dark. You know that Stagger Lee was a bad man and that Frankie was a good girl. You know that Washington is a bourgeois town and you've heard the deep-pitched voice of John the Revelator and you saw the Titanic sink in a boggy creek. And you're pals with the wild Irish rover and the wild colonial boy. You heard the muffled drums and the fifes that played lowly. You've seen the lusty Lord Donald stick a knife in his wife, and a lot of your comrades have been wrapped in white linen.

I had all the vernacular all down. I knew the rhetoric. None of it went over my head – the devices, the techniques, the secrets, the mysteries – and I knew all the deserted roads that it traveled on, too. I could make it all connect and move with the current of the day. When I started writing my own songs, the folk lingo was the only vocabulary that I knew, and I used it.

But I had something else as well. I had principals and sensibilities and an informed view of the world. And I had had that for a while. Learned it all in grammar school. Don Quixote, Ivanhoe, Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, Tale of Two Cities, all the rest – typical grammar school reading that gave you a way of looking at life, an understanding of human nature, and a standard to measure things by. I took all that with me when I started composing lyrics. And the themes from those books worked their way into many of my songs, either knowingly or unintentionally. I wanted to write songs unlike anything anybody ever heard, and these themes were fundamental.

Specific books that have stuck with me ever since I read them way back in grammar school – I want to tell you about three of them: Moby Dick, All Quiet on the Western Front and The Odyssey.

Moby Dick is a fascinating book, a book that's filled with scenes of high drama and dramatic dialogue. The book makes demands on you. The plot is straightforward. The mysterious Captain Ahab – captain of a ship called the Pequod –  an egomaniac with a peg leg pursuing his nemesis, the great white whale Moby Dick who took his leg. And he pursues him all the way from the Atlantic around the tip of Africa and into the Indian Ocean. He pursues the whale around both sides of the earth. It's an abstract goal, nothing concrete or definite. He calls Moby the emperor, sees him as the embodiment of evil. Ahab's got a wife and child back in Nantucket that he reminisces about now and again. You can anticipate what will happen.

The ship's crew is made up of men of different races, and any one of them who sights the whale will be given the reward of a gold coin. A lot of Zodiac symbols, religious allegory, stereotypes. Ahab encounters other whaling vessels, presses the captains for details about Moby. Have they seen him? There's a crazy prophet, Gabriel, on one of the vessels, and he predicts Ahab's doom. Says Moby is the incarnate of a Shaker god, and that any dealings with him will lead to disaster. He says that to Captain Ahab. Another ship's captain – Captain Boomer – he lost an arm to Moby. But he tolerates that, and he's happy to have survived. He can't accept Ahab's lust for vengeance.

This book tells how different men react in different ways to the same experience. A lot of Old Testament, biblical allegory: Gabriel, Rachel, Jeroboam, Bildah, Elijah. Pagan names as well: Tashtego, Flask, Daggoo, Fleece, Starbuck, Stubb, Martha's Vineyard. The Pagans are idol worshippers. Some worship little wax figures, some wooden figures. Some worship fire. The Pequod is the name of an Indian tribe.

Moby Dick is a seafaring tale. One of the men, the narrator, says, "Call me Ishmael." Somebody asks him where he's from, and he says, "It's not down on any map. True places never are." Stubb gives no significance to anything, says everything is predestined. Ishmael's been on a sailing ship his entire life. Calls the sailing ships his Harvard and Yale. He keeps his distance from people.

A typhoon hits the Pequod. Captain Ahab thinks it's a good omen. Starbuck thinks it's a bad omen, considers killing Ahab. As soon as the storm ends, a crewmember falls from the ship's mast and drowns, foreshadowing what's to come. A Quaker pacifist priest, who is actually a bloodthirsty businessman, tells Flask, "Some men who receive injuries are led to God, others are led to bitterness."

Everything is mixed in. All the myths: the Judeo Christian bible, Hindu myths, British legends, Saint George, Perseus, Hercules – they're all whalers. Greek mythology, the gory business of cutting up a whale. Lots of facts in this book, geographical knowledge, whale oil – good for coronation of royalty – noble families in the whaling industry. Whale oil is used to anoint the kings. History of the whale, phrenology, classical philosophy, pseudo-scientific theories, justification for discrimination – everything thrown in and none of it hardly rational. Highbrow, lowbrow, chasing illusion, chasing death, the great white whale, white as polar bear, white as a white man, the emperor, the nemesis, the embodiment of evil. The demented captain who actually lost his leg years ago trying to attack Moby with a knife.

We see only the surface of things. We can interpret what lies below any way we see fit. Crewmen walk around on deck listening for mermaids, and sharks and vultures follow the ship. Reading skulls and faces like you read a book. Here's a face. I'll put it in front of you. Read it if you can.

Tashtego says that he died and was reborn. His extra days are a gift. He wasn't saved by Christ, though, he says he was saved by a fellow man and a non-Christian at that. He parodies the resurrection.

When Starbuck tells Ahab that he should let bygones be bygones, the angry captain snaps back, "Speak not to me of blasphemy, man, I'd strike the sun if it insulted me." Ahab, too, is a poet of eloquence. He says, "The path to my fixed purpose is laid with iron rails whereon my soul is grooved to run."  Or these lines, "All visible objects are but pasteboard masks." Quotable poetic phrases that can't be beat.

Finally, Ahab spots Moby, and the harpoons come out. Boats are lowered. Ahab's harpoon has been baptized in blood. Moby attacks Ahab's boat and destroys it. Next day, he sights Moby again. Boats are lowered again. Moby attacks Ahab's boat again. On the third day, another boat goes in. More religious allegory. He has risen. Moby attacks one more time, ramming the Pequod and sinking it. Ahab gets tangled up in the harpoon lines and is thrown out of his boat into a watery grave.

Ishmael survives. He's in the sea floating on a coffin. And that's about it. That's the whole story. That theme and all that it implies would work its way into more than a few of my songs.

All Quiet on the Western Front was another book that did. All Quiet on the Western Front is a horror story. This is a book where you lose your childhood, your faith in a meaningful world, and your concern for individuals. You're stuck in a nightmare. Sucked up into a mysterious whirlpool of death and pain. You're defending yourself from elimination. You're being wiped off the face of the map. Once upon a time you were an innocent youth with big dreams about being a concert pianist. Once you loved life and the world, and now you're shooting it to pieces.

Day after day, the hornets bite you and worms lap your blood. You're a cornered animal. You don't fit anywhere. The falling rain is monotonous. There's endless assaults, poison gas, nerve gas, morphine, burning streams of gasoline, scavenging and scabbing for food, influenza, typhus, dysentery. Life is breaking down all around you, and the shells are whistling. This is the lower region of hell. Mud, barbed wire, rat-filled trenches, rats eating the intestines of dead men, trenches filled with filth and excrement. Someone shouts, "Hey, you there. Stand and fight."

Who knows how long this mess will go on? Warfare has no limits. You're being annihilated, and that leg of yours is bleeding too much. You killed a man yesterday, and you spoke to his corpse. You told him after this is over, you'll spend the rest of your life looking after his family. Who's profiting here? The leaders and the generals gain fame, and many others profit financially. But you're doing the dirty work. One of your comrades says, "Wait a minute, where are you going?" And you say, "Leave me alone, I'll be back in a minute." Then you walk out into the woods of death hunting for a piece of sausage. You can't see how anybody in civilian life has any kind of purpose at all. All their worries, all their desires – you can't comprehend it.

More machine guns rattle, more parts of bodies hanging from wires, more pieces of arms and legs and skulls where butterflies perch on teeth, more hideous wounds, pus coming out of every pore, lung wounds, wounds too big for the body, gas-blowing cadavers, and dead bodies making retching noises. Death is everywhere. Nothing else is possible. Someone will kill you and use your dead body for target practice. Boots, too. They're your prized possession. But soon they'll be on somebody else's feet.

There's Froggies coming through the trees. Merciless bastards. Your shells are running out. "It's not fair to come at us again so soon," you say. One of your companions is laying in the dirt, and you want to take him to the field hospital. Someone else says, "You might save yourself a trip." "What do you mean?" "Turn him over, you'll see what I mean."

You wait to hear the news. You don't understand why the war isn't over. The army is so strapped for replacement troops that they're drafting young boys who are of little military use, but they're draftin' ‘em anyway because they're running out of men. Sickness and humiliation have broken your heart. You were betrayed by your parents, your schoolmasters, your ministers, and even your own government.

The general with the slowly smoked cigar betrayed you too – turned you into a thug and a murderer. If you could, you'd put a bullet in his face. The commander as well. You fantasize that if you had the money, you'd put up a reward for any man who would take his life by any means necessary. And if he should lose his life by doing that, then let the money go to his heirs. The colonel, too, with his caviar and his coffee – he's another one. Spends all his time in the officers' brothel. You'd like to see him stoned dead too. More Tommies and Johnnies with their whack fo' me daddy-o and their whiskey in the jars. You kill twenty of ‘em and twenty more will spring up in their place. It just stinks in your nostrils.

You've come to despise that older generation that sent you out into this madness, into this torture chamber. All around you, your comrades are dying. Dying from abdominal wounds, double amputations, shattered hipbones, and you think, "I'm only twenty years old, but I'm capable of killing anybody. Even my father if he came at me."

Yesterday, you tried to save a wounded messenger dog, and somebody shouted, "Don't be a fool." One Froggy is laying gurgling at your feet. You stuck him with a dagger in his stomach, but the man still lives. You know you should finish the job, but you can't. You're on the real iron cross, and a Roman soldier's putting a sponge of vinegar to your lips.

Months pass by. You go home on leave. You can't communicate with your father. He said, "You'd be a coward if you don't enlist." Your mother, too, on your way back out the door, she says, "You be careful of those French girls now." More madness. You fight for a week or a month, and you gain ten yards. And then the next month it gets taken back.

All that culture from a thousand years ago, that philosophy, that wisdom – Plato, Aristotle, Socrates – what happened to it?  It should have prevented this. Your thoughts turn homeward. And once again you're a schoolboy walking through the tall poplar trees. It's a pleasant memory. More bombs dropping on you from blimps. You got to get it together now. You can't even look at anybody for fear of some miscalculable thing that might happen. The common grave. There are no other possibilities.

Then you notice the cherry blossoms, and you see that nature is unaffected by all this. Poplar trees, the red butterflies, the fragile beauty of flowers, the sun – you see how nature is indifferent to it all. All the violence and suffering of all mankind. Nature doesn't even notice it.

You're so alone. Then a piece of shrapnel hits the side of your head and you're dead.
You've been ruled out, crossed out. You've been exterminated. I put this book down and closed it up. I never wanted to read another war novel again, and I never did.

Charlie Poole from North Carolina had a song that connected to all this. It's called "You Ain't Talkin' to Me," and the lyrics go like this:

I saw a sign in a window walking up town one day.
Join the army, see the world is what it had to say.
You'll see exciting places with a jolly crew,
You'll meet interesting people, and learn to kill them too.
Oh you ain't talkin' to me, you ain't talking to me.
I may be crazy and all that, but I got good sense you see.
You ain't talkin' to me, you ain't talkin' to me.
Killin' with a gun don't sound like fun.
You ain't talkin' to me.

The Odyssey is a great book whose themes have worked its way into the ballads of a lot of songwriters: "Homeward Bound, "Green, Green Grass of Home," "Home on the Range," and my songs as well.

The Odyssey is a strange, adventurous tale of a grown man trying to get home after fighting in a war. He's on that long journey home, and it's filled with traps and pitfalls. He's cursed to wander. He's always getting carried out to sea, always having close calls. Huge chunks of boulders rock his boat. He angers people he shouldn't. There's troublemakers in his crew. Treachery. His men are turned into pigs and then are turned back into younger, more handsome men. He's always trying to rescue somebody. He's a travelin' man, but he's making a lot of stops.

He's stranded on a desert island. He finds deserted caves, and he hides in them. He meets giants that say, "I'll eat you last." And he escapes from giants. He's trying to get back home, but he's tossed and turned by the winds. Restless winds, chilly winds, unfriendly winds. He travels far, and then he gets blown back.

He's always being warned of things to come. Touching things he's told not to. There's two roads to take, and they're both bad. Both hazardous. On one you could drown and on the other you could starve. He goes into the narrow straits with foaming whirlpools that swallow him. Meets six-headed monsters with sharp fangs. Thunderbolts strike at him. Overhanging branches that he makes a leap to reach for to save himself from a raging river. Goddesses and gods protect him, but some others want to kill him. He changes identities. He's exhausted. He falls asleep, and he's woken up by the sound of laughter. He tells his story to strangers. He's been gone twenty years. He was carried off somewhere and left there. Drugs have been dropped into his wine. It's been a hard road to travel.

In a lot of ways, some of these same things have happened to you. You too have had drugs dropped into your wine. You too have shared a bed with the wrong woman. You too have been spellbound by magical voices, sweet voices with strange melodies. You too have come so far and have been so far blown back. And you've had close calls as well. You have angered people you should not have. And you too have rambled this country all around. And you've also felt that ill wind, the one that blows you no good. And that's still not all of it.

When he gets back home, things aren't any better. Scoundrels have moved in and are taking advantage of his wife's hospitality. And there's too many of ‘em. And though he's greater than them all and the best at everything – best carpenter, best hunter, best expert on animals, best seaman – his courage won't save him, but his trickery will.

All these stragglers will have to pay for desecrating his palace. He'll disguise himself as a filthy beggar, and a lowly servant kicks him down the steps with arrogance and stupidity. So what does it all mean? Myself and a lot of other songwriters have been influenced by these very same themes. And they can mean a lot of different things. If a song moves you, that's all that's important. I don't have to know what a song means. I've written all kinds of things into my songs. And I'm not going to worry about it – what it all means. When Melville put all his old testament, biblical references, scientific theories, Protestant doctrines, and all that knowledge of the sea and sailing ships and whales into one story, I don't think he would have worried about it either – what it all means.

John Donne as well, the poet-priest who lived in the time of Shakespeare, wrote these words, "The Sestos and Abydos of her breasts. Not of two lovers, but two loves, the nests." I don't know what it means, either. But it sounds good. And you want your songs to sound good.

When Odysseus in The Odyssey visits the famed warrior Achilles in the underworld – Achilles, who traded a long life full of peace and contentment for a short one full of honor and glory –  tells Odysseus it was all a mistake. "I just died, that's all." There was no honor. No immortality. And that if he could, he would choose to go back and be a lowly slave to a tenant farmer on Earth rather than be what he is – a king in the land of the dead – that whatever his struggles of life were, they were preferable to being here in this dead place.

That's what songs are too. Our songs are alive in the land of the living. But songs are unlike literature. They're meant to be sung, not read. The words in Shakespeare's plays were meant to be acted on the stage. Just as lyrics in songs are meant to be sung, not read on a page. And I hope some of you get the chance to listen to these lyrics the way they were intended to be heard: in concert or on record or however people are listening to songs these days. I return once again to Homer, who says, "Sing in me, oh Muse, and through me tell the story."

Mulher do Ano 2016 da Billboard - Madonna




Madonna ganhou o título de Mulher do Ano.
O prémio foi-lhe atribuído pela revista de música norte-americana Billboard.

58 anos, 33 de carreira, como cantora, actriz, produtora, escritora, realizadora, e... rainha da pop, resumindo. Mãe de quatro filhos, Madonna não se conteve e, na cerimónia de entrega do prémio, fez um discurso emotivo em Nova Iorque, no qual abordou os desafios da maternidade, num ano em que a filha mais velha, Lourdes, saiu de casa para ir para a universidade, e que se envolveu numa batalha pela custódia do filho Rocco, com o ex-marido, o realizador britânico Guy Ritchie.

"A maior conquista deste ano foi conseguir terminar a minha digressão, fazer os meus espectáculos todas as noites e lidar com os desafios de ser mãe. Esse será sempre o principal desafio para mim: conseguir ser boa mãe e boa artista", descreveu Madonna.

De recordar que a cantora é a mulher que mais lucrou com digressões na história da música.

Nunca gostei da música da Madonna.
Assim como também não me identifico com ela em muitas coisas.
Por exemplo, quando ela fala no seu discurso sobre o direito das mulheres a envelhecer...uma coisa é o que se diz, outra bem diferente é o que se faz...a meu ver, a sua forma de envelhecer revela que, apesar do que diz, não se deu o direito de envelhecer como fala no seu discurso, com tantas plásticas e exercício físico levado ao extremo, para "agradar" ao predador que tanto critica no seu discurso.

Mas, não deixa de dizer umas verdades.
E por isso, publico o discurso que fez, ao receber o prémio de Mulher do Ano 2016 da Billboard.
Cada um que o interiorize da forma que lhe for mais positiva.

Segue abaixo na integra o seu discurso:

“Estou aqui em frente a vocês como um capacho. Quer dizer, como uma artista feminina. Obrigada por reconhecerem minha habilidade de dar continuidade à minha carreira por 34 anos diante do sexismo e da misoginia gritante, e do bullying e abuso constante.

As pessoas estavam a morrer de AIDS em todos os lugares. Não era seguro ser gay, não era bom ser associada à comunidade gay. Era 1979 e Nova York era um lugar muito assustador. No meu primeiro ano [na cidade] eu fiquei sob a mira de uma arma de fogo, fui estuprada num terraço com uma faca na minha garganta e tive meu apartamento invadido e roubado tantas vezes que parei de trancar as portas. Com o passar do tempo, perdi para a AIDS, ou para as drogas, ou para as armas, quase todos os amigos que tinha. Como vocês podem imaginar, todos esses acontecimentos inesperados não apenas me ajudaram a me tornar a mulher ousada que está aqui, mas também me lembraram que sou vulnerável, e que na vida não há segurança verdadeira excepto a sua autoconfiança.

Eu me inspirei, é claro, em Debbie Harry e Chrissie Hynde e Aretha Franklin, mas a minha verdadeira musa era David Bowie. Ele personificava o espírito masculino e feminino e isso me agradava. Ele me fez pensar que não havia regras. Mas eu estava errada. Não há regras se fores um homem. Há regras se fores uma mulher. Se fores mulher, tens que jogar o jogo. Você tem permissão para ser bonita, fofa e sexy. Mas não para ser inteligente. Não aja como você tivesse uma opinião que vá contra o status quo. Você pode ser objectificada pelos homens e pode se vestir como uma prostituta, mas não assuma e se orgulhe da vadia em você. E não, eu repito, não compartilhe suas próprias fantasias sexuais com o mundo. Seja o que os homens querem que você seja, e mais importante, seja alguém com quem as mulheres se sintam confortáveis quando você estiver perto de outros homens. E por fim, não envelheça. Porque envelhecer é um pecado. Você vai ser criticada e humilhada e definitivamente não tocará nas rádios.

Eventualmente fui deixada em paz porque me casei com Sean Penn e estava fora do mercado. Por um tempo eu não fui considerada uma ameaça. Anos depois, divorciada e solteira, fiz meu álbum ‘Erotica’ e meu livro ‘Sex’ foi lançado. Eu me lembro de ser a manchete de cada jornal e revista. Tudo que lia sobre mim era mau. Eu era chamada de vagabunda e de bruxa. Uma das manchetes me comparava ao diabo. Eu disse ‘Espera aí, o Prince não anda a correr por aí em meia-calça, salto alto, batom e a mostrar o rabo?’ Sim, ele estava. Mas ele era um homem. Essa foi a primeira vez que eu realmente entendi que as mulheres não têm a mesma liberdade que os homens.

Eu me lembro de desejar ter uma mulher para me apoiar. Camille Paglia, a famosa escritora feminista, disse que eu fiz as mulheres retrocederem ao me objectificar sexualmente. Então eu pensei, ‘Se você é uma feminista, você não tem sexualidade, você a nega’. E eu disse ‘Dane-se. Eu sou um tipo diferente de feminista. Sou uma feminista má’.

Eu acho que a coisa mais controversa que eu já fiz foi ficar aqui. Michael se foi. Tupac se foi. Prince se foi. Whitney se foi. Amy Winehouse se foi. David Bowie se foi. Mas eu continuo aqui. Eu sou uma das sortudas e todo dia eu agradeço por isso.

O que eu gostaria de dizer para todas as mulheres que estão aqui hoje é: Mulheres têm sido oprimidas por tanto tempo que elas acreditam no que os homens falam sobre elas. Elas acreditam que elas precisam apoiar um homem. E há alguns homens bons e dignos de serem apoiados, mas não por serem homens, mas porque eles valem a pena. Como mulheres, nós temos que começar a apreciar nosso próprio mérito. Procurem mulheres fortes para que sejam amigas, para que sejam aliadas, para aprender com elas, para que se inspirem, apoiem e instruam.

Estou aqui porque quero agradecer, mais do que para receber este prémio.
Agradecer não apenas a todas as mulheres que me amaram e me apoiaram ao longo do caminho; vocês não têm ideia de quanto o vosso apoio significa.
Mas para aqueles que duvidam, e para todos os que me disseram que eu não poderia, que eu não iria e que eu não deveria, a vossa resistência me fez mais forte, me fez insistir ainda mais, me fez a lutadora que sou hoje. Me fez a mulher que sou hoje.
Então, obrigada.”

Onde está tua coragem?



Não vais acreditar.
Mas tu cabias aqui.
Eu segurava em ti e dizia:

E tu cresceste bom, maravilhoso.

E agora, a história verídica do actor, Sylvester Stallone:

Seu nome é Sylvester Stallone. Um lutador em todos os sentidos da palavra.
Nasceu com uma paralisia facial o que lhe rendeu apelidos e bullying na infância. Num ponto da sua vida estava tão pobre que roubou as poucas jóias que a sua mulher tinha e as vendeu. As coisas ficaram tão más que ele acabou a morar na rua.
Sim, ele dormiu na estação de autocarros de Nova York por 3 dias.

Incapaz de pagar aluguer ou comprar comida. O fundo do poço chegou quando ele teve de vender o seu cachorro numa loja de bebida para um estranho qualquer pois não tinha dinheiro para alimenta-lo. Ele vendeu-o por $25, entregou o seu cachorro e saiu a chorar.
Duas semanas depois ele viu uma luta de boxe entre Mohammed Ali e Chuck Wepner e essa luta o inspirou a escrever o roteiro de ROCKY.
Ele escreveu o roteiro durante 20 horas seguidas!
Tentou vendê-lo e recebeu a oferta de $125.000, mas tinha apenas UM PEDIDO. Ele queria ESTRELAR no filme como o personagem principal ROCKY, mas o estúdio disse NÃO.
Eles queriam uma "estrela" de verdade.

Disseram que ele "tinha um rosto engraçado e falava engraçado".
Ele saiu com seu roteiro.
Depois de algumas semanas o estúdio ofereceu $250,000, ele recusou, então ofereceram $350,000, e ele ainda recusou. Queriam o seu filme mas não o queriam. Ele disse NÃO! Eu tenho que estar nesse filme.
Depois de um tempo o estúdio concordou em lhe dar $35,000 pelo roteiro e deixaram-no estrelar o filme. O resto entrou para a história do cinema.
O filme GANHOU prémios de MELHOR FILME, MELHOR DIRECÇÃO, MELHOR EDIÇÃO e o prestigioso OSCAR de MELHOR FILME.
Ele ainda foi nomeado como MELHOR ACTOR!
O filme ROCKY entrou para os registos americanos da indústria de cinema como um dos maiores filmes até então feitos.

E sabem a primeira coisa que ele fez com os $35,000?

COMPROU DE VOLTA O CACHORRO QUE TINHA VENDIDO.
Ficou parado na loja por 3 dias até que o homem voltasse com o seu cachorro.
O homem recusou-se a vende-lo mesmo por $100, Stallone então ofereceu $500, ele recusou. Ele então ofereceu $1.000. Acreditem ou não, Stallone teve de pagar $15.000 pelo mesmo cachorro que ele vendera por $25.

O mesmo Stallone que morou na rua, que vendeu o seu cachorro pois não podia alimentá-lo, é um dos maiores ícones do cinema mundial hoje.

E ele mesmo diz...

"Não ter dinheiro é mau, MUITO MAU. 
A vida não será fácil. 
Oportunidades vão passar-vos ao lado, por não serem ninguém.

Assim é, infelizmente!
É a minha realidade...inclusive a parte de dormir na rua...
A vida dá cada volta...
Quando se decide saltar para o abismo, em prol de um sonho, o mais provável é que as coisas corram mal. As pessoas não acreditam em nós, no nosso potencial. Acreditam no produto, mas sem nos incluir a nós. E aí temos de decidir: cair na pobreza e no desespero, ou contentarmo-nos com as migalhas que nos derem. E quem decide o tudo ou nada, como eu decidi, acaba sem nada, na pobreza, por muito tempo.
Só se acreditarmos muito no nosso sonho é que conseguimos sobreviver.
E nessa fase, temos de fazer os trabalhos que mais nos custam e que não nos preenchem em nada, muito pelo contrário, só nos fazem sentir humilhados.
Tudo para não passar fome, não nos prostituirmos, nem fazer algo de ilegal.
E o tempo passa, e nada acontece, mas continuamos a lutar!
Até que chega uma altura em que já não se tem nada a perder!
A partir dali só há caminho para cima, porque já não podemos descer mais.
E aí, aguentamos o que for, durante o tempo que for.

Martin Luther King Jr "I have a dream" "Eu tenho um sonho" - legendado

                                           


"Eu estou contente em unir-me com vocês no dia que entrará para a história como a maior demonstração pela liberdade na história de nossa nação.

Cem anos atrás, um grande americano, na qual estamos sob sua simbólica sombra, assinou a Proclamação de Emancipação. Esse importante decreto veio como um grande farol de esperança para milhões de escravos negros que tinham murchado nas chamas da injustiça. Ele veio como uma alvorada para terminar a longa noite de seus cativeiros.
Mas cem anos depois, o Negro ainda não é livre.
Cem anos depois, a vida do Negro ainda é tristemente inválida pelas algemas da segregação e as cadeias de discriminação.
Cem anos depois, o Negro vive numa ilha só de pobreza no meio de um vasto oceano de prosperidade material. Cem anos depois, o Negro ainda adoece nos cantos da sociedade americana e se encontram exilados em sua própria terra. Assim, nós viemos aqui hoje para dramatizar sua vergonhosa condição.

De certo modo, nós viemos à capital da nossa nação para trocar um cheque.
Quando os arquitectos da nossa república escreveram as magníficas palavras da Constituição e a Declaração da Independência, eles estavam a assinar uma nota promissória para a qual todo americano seria seu herdeiro. Esta nota era uma promessa que todos os homens, sim, os homens negros, como também os homens brancos, teriam garantidos os direitos inalienáveis de vida, liberdade e a busca da felicidade. Hoje é óbvio que aquela América não apresentou esta nota promissória. Em vez de honrar esta obrigação sagrada, a América deu para o povo negro um cheque sem fundo, um cheque que voltou marcado com "fundos insuficientes".

Mas nós nos recusamos a acreditar que o banco da justiça é falível. Nós nos recusamos a acreditar que há capitais insuficientes de oportunidade nesta nação. Assim nós viemos trocar este cheque, um cheque que nos dará o direito de reclamar as riquezas de liberdade e a segurança da justiça.

Nós também viemos para recordar à América dessa cruel urgência. Este não é o momento para descansar no luxo refrescante ou tomar o remédio tranquilizante do gradualismo.
Agora é o tempo para transformar em realidade as promessas de democracia.
Agora é o tempo para subir do vale das trevas da segregação ao caminho iluminado pelo sol da justiça racial.
Agora é o tempo para erguer a nossa nação das areias movediças da injustiça racial para a pedra sólida da fraternidade.
Agora é o tempo para fazer da justiça uma realidade para todos os filhos de Deus.

Seria fatal para a nação negligenciar a urgência desse momento. Este verão sufocante do legítimo descontentamento dos Negros não passará até termos um renovador outono de liberdade e igualdade. Este ano de 1963 não é um fim, mas um começo. 
Esses que esperam que o Negro agora estará contente, terão um violento despertar se a nação votar aos negócios de sempre.

Mas há algo que eu tenho que dizer ao meu povo que se dirige ao portal que conduz ao palácio da justiça. No processo de conquistar o nosso legítimo direito, nós não devemos ser culpados de acções de injustiças. Não vamos satisfazer a nossa sede de liberdade bebendo da xícara da amargura e do ódio. Nós sempre temos que conduzir a nossa luta num alto nível de dignidade e disciplina. Nós não devemos permitir que o nosso criativo protesto se degenere em violência física. Novamente e novamente nós temos que subir às majestosas alturas da reunião da força física com a força de alma. Nossa nova e maravilhosa combatividade mostrou à comunidade negra que não devemos ter uma desconfiança para com todas as pessoas brancas, para muitos dos nossos irmãos brancos, como comprovamos pela presença deles aqui hoje, vieram entender que o destino deles é amarrado ao nosso destino. Eles vieram perceber que a liberdade deles é ligada indissoluvelmente a nossa liberdade. Nós não podemos caminhar só.

E como nós caminhamos, nós temos que fazer a promessa que nós sempre marcharemos à frente. Nós não podemos retroceder. Há esses que estão a perguntar para os devotos dos direitos civis,
"Quando vocês estarão satisfeitos?"

Nós nunca estaremos satisfeitos enquanto o Negro for vítima dos horrores indizíveis da brutalidade policial. Nós nunca estaremos satisfeitos enquanto os nossos corpos, pesados com a fadiga da viagem, não poderem ter hospedagem nos motéis das estradas e os hotéis das cidades. Nós não estaremos satisfeitos enquanto um Negro não puder votar no Mississipi e um Negro em Nova Iorque acreditar que ele não tem motivo para votar. Não, não, nós não estamos satisfeitos e nós não estaremos satisfeitos até que a justiça e a rectidão rolem abaixo como águas de uma poderosa correnteza.

Eu não esqueci que alguns de você vieram até aqui após grandes testes e sofrimentos. Alguns de vocês vieram recentemente de celas estreitas das prisões. Alguns de vocês vieram de áreas onde a sua busca pela liberdade lhe deixaram marcas pelas tempestades das perseguições e pelos ventos de brutalidade policial. Vocês são o veteranos do sofrimento. Continuem a trabalhar com a fé que sofrimento imerecido é redentor. Voltem para o Mississippi, voltem para o Alabama, voltem para a Carolina do Sul, voltem para a Geórgia, voltem para Louisiana, voltem para as ruas sujas e guetos das nossas cidades do norte, sabendo que de alguma maneira esta situação pode e será mudada.
Não se deixem cair no vale de desespero.

Eu digo a vocês hoje, meus amigos, que embora nós enfrentemos as dificuldades de hoje e amanhã. Eu ainda tenho um sonho. 
É um sonho profundamente enraizado no sonho americano.

Eu tenho um sonho que um dia esta nação se levantará e viverá o verdadeiro significado de sua crença - nós celebraremos estas verdades e elas serão claras para todos, que os homens são criados iguais.

Eu tenho um sonho que um dia nas colinas vermelhas da Geórgia os filhos dos descendentes de escravos e os filhos dos desdentes dos donos de escravos poderão se sentar junto à mesa da fraternidade.

Eu tenho um sonho que um dia, até mesmo no estado de Mississippi, um estado que transpira com o calor da injustiça, que transpira com o calor de opressão, será transformado em um oásis de liberdade e justiça.

Eu tenho um sonho que minhas quatro pequenas crianças vão um dia viver numa nação onde elas não serão julgadas pela cor da pele, mas pelo conteúdo de seu carácter. 
Eu tenho um sonho hoje!

Eu tenho um sonho que um dia, no Alabama, com seus racistas malignos, com seu governador que tem os lábios gotejando palavras de intervenção e negação; nesse justo dia no Alabama meninos negros e meninas negras poderão unir as mãos com meninos brancos e meninas brancas como irmãs e irmãos.
Eu tenho um sonho hoje!

Eu tenho um sonho que um dia todo o vale será exaltado, e todas as colinas e montanhas virão abaixo, os lugares ásperos serão aplainados e os lugares tortuosos serão endireitados e a glória do Senhor será revelada e toda a carne estará junta.

Esta é nossa esperança.
Esta é a fé com que regressarei para o Sul.
Com esta fé nós poderemos cortar da montanha do desespero uma pedra de esperança.
Com esta fé nós poderemos transformar as discórdias estridentes da nossa nação numa bela sinfonia de fraternidade.
Com esta fé nós poderemos trabalhar juntos, rezar juntos, lutar juntos, para ir encarcerar juntos, defender liberdade juntos, e quem sabe nós seremos um dia livre.
Este será o dia, este será o dia quando todas as crianças de Deus poderão cantar com um novo significado.

"Meu país, doce terra de liberdade, eu te canto.

Terra onde meus pais morreram, terra do orgulho dos peregrinos,

De qualquer lado da montanha, ouço o sino da liberdade!"

E se a América é uma grande nação, isto tem que se tornar verdadeiro.

E assim ouvirei o sino da liberdade no extraordinário topo da montanha de New Hampshire.

Ouvirei o sino da liberdade nas poderosas montanhas poderosas de Nova York.

Ouvirei o sino da liberdade nos engrandecidos Alleghenies da Pennsylvania.

Ouvirei o sino da liberdade nas montanhas cobertas de neve Rockies do Colorado.

E quando isto acontecer, quando nós permitimos o sino da liberdade soar, quando nós deixarmos ele soar em toda a moradia e todo o vilarejo, em todo o estado e em toda a cidade, nós poderemos acelerar aquele dia quando todas as crianças de Deus, homens pretos e homens brancos, judeus e gentios, protestantes e católicos, poderão unir mãos e cantar nas palavras do velho spiritual negro:

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Recentemente, a escritora feminista Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie fez um discurso na cerimónia de formatura do Wellesley College, faculdade liberal para mulheres em Massachusetts, Estados Unidos. E todos deveriam ouvi-lo.

A premiada escritora falou sobre feminismo, privilégios dos homens e a coragem de expressar opiniões. Adichie disse que entendeu bem cedo que o mundo não tratava as mulheres como trata os homens. Sabia que “os homens não eram inerentemente maus. Eram simplesmente privilegiados. E sabia que o privilégio cega, porque é da natureza do privilégio cegar”.

Ela disse à plateia de recém-formadas que elas agora também dispunham de um certo privilégio, depois de se formarem numa faculdade de prestígio para mulheres. “Não importa o seu passado. Esse diploma e a experiência de estar aqui são um privilégio”, disse. “Não permitam que isso (o privilégio) as cegue demais. Às vezes vocês precisarão empurrá-lo para o outro lado para ver claramente.”

A escritora de 37 anos também deu conselhos de vida para inspirar as mentes e incentivar acções, dizendo: “Faço um apelo para que tentem criar o mundo no qual querem viver… Sirvam o mundo de uma forma que possam mudá-lo. Sirvam de uma maneira real, activa, prática, coloquem a mão na massa”.

Adichie continuou, listando várias maneiras pelas quais as recém-formadas podem transformar o mundo:

“Escrevam roteiros de programas de televisão nos quais a força das mulheres não seja retratada como algo extraordinário, mas normal. Ensinem os seus alunos a ver a vulnerabilidade como um traço humano em vez de feminino.”

“Encomendem artigos de revista que ensinem os homens a fazer uma mulher feliz. Porque já existem muitos artigos que dizem às mulheres como fazer um homem feliz.”

“Façam campanhas e se mobilizem a favor da licença-paternidade remunerada em todos os cantos nos Estados Unidos.”

“Empreguem mais mulheres onde existem poucas. Mas lembrem-se que a mulher contratada não precisa ser excepcionalmente boa. Como a maioria dos homens que são contratados, ela apenas precisa ser boa o suficiente.”

Adichie lembrou o público que o feminismo realmente serve para todos. “O feminismo deve ser um partido inclusivo. O feminismo deve ser um partido cheio de diferentes feminismos”, disse, acrescentando “por isso, turma de 2015, saiam daqui e façam do feminismo um grande, estridente e inclusivo partido”.

Ela concluiu o discurso com uma observação linda e comovente, dizendo às jovens que a coisa mais importante no mundo é o amor – mas lembrar de dar amor e receber amor é a chave. “Agora as raparigas muitas vezes são criadas para ver o amor apenas como doação. As mulheres são apreciadas por seu amor quando aquele amor é um acto de doação. Mas amar é dar e receber”, disse.

“Por favor, amem doando e recebendo. Doem e recebam. Se estiverem apenas doando sem receber, saberão. Saberão a partir daquela pequena e verdadeira voz interna que nós mulheres tantas vezes socializamos ao silêncio.”

Adichie conclui seu discurso dizendo ao público: 
“Não silenciem essa voz. 
Enfrentem o desafio”.

Any Given Sunday



I don't know what to say really.
Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives all comes down to today.
Either we heal as a team or we are going to crumble.

Inch by inch, play by play till we're finished.
We are in hell right now, gentlemen believe me and we can stay here and get the shit kicked out of us
or we can fight our way back into the light.
We can climb out of hell.
One inch, at a time.

Now I can't do it for you.
I'm too old.
I look around and I see these young faces and I think
I mean
I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make.
I uh....
I pissed away all my money believe it or not.
I chased off anyone who has ever loved me.
And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror.

You know when you get old in life things get taken from you.
That's, that's part of life.
But, you only learn that when you start losing stuff.
You find out that life is just a game of inches.
So is football.
Because in either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small.
I mean, one half step too late or to early, you don't quite make it.
One half second too slow or too fast and you don't quite catch it.
The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game, every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch
On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us to pieces for that inch.
We CLAW with our finger nails for that inch.
Cause we know when we add up all those inches, that's going to make the fucking difference between WINNING and LOSING, between LIVING and DYING.

I'll tell you this,
in any fight it is the guy who is willing to die, who is going to win that inch.
And I know if I am going to have any life anymore it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch, because that is what LIVING is.

Eu não sei qual tipo de sonho você tem...



Eu não sei qual tipo de sonho você tem, eu não me importo com o quão difícil tem sido lutar por esse sonho, mas esse sonho que você tem em sua mente, ele é possível.

Alguns de vocês já sabem...
Vai ser difícil. Não vai ser fácil. É difícil mudar sua vida.
No caminho pela busca de seus sonhos, você vai enfrentar muitas dificuldades, um monte de fracassos, muita dor.
Há momentos que você vai se questionar, você diz:
- Por que Deus? Por que isso está acontecendo comigo? Eu estou apenas tentando cuidar dos meus filhos e minha mãe, eu não estou tentando roubar, nem assaltar ninguém. Por que isso tem que acontecer comigo?
Para vocês que terão de passar por isso, não desistam do seu sonho.
Os tempos difíceis vão chegar, mas eles não vieram para ficar, eles vêm e passam.

Grandeza não é aquela coisa maravilhosa, esotérica, ilusória, um dom divino, que apenas poucas pessoas especiais vão experimentar. É algo que realmente, existe em todos nós.
É muito importante que você acredite que você é o melhor.

A maioria das pessoas, constroem uma família, eles ganham a vida, e então morrem, eles param de crescer, param de trabalhar neles mesmos, eles param de ser flexíveis, eles param de se empenhar. Muitas pessoas gostam de reclamar, mas elas não fazem nada a respeito.
A maioria das pessoas não lutam por seus sonhos, por quê? 
É por causa do medo, o medo do fracasso: "E se as coisas não derem certo?".
E o medo do sucesso: "E se eu conseguir e não puder lidar?".
Esses não são corajosos.

Você passa muito tempo com as pessoas, você gasta muito tempo tentando fazer com que elas gostem de você, você conhece mais elas do que conhece a você mesmo. Você estudou-as, você sabe tudo sobre elas, você quer agir como elas, você quer ser igual a elas. E sabe o que mais? Você perdeu tanto tempo com elas, que você já não sabe mais quem é você. Eu te desafio a passar um tempo sozinho.

É necessário afastar os perdedores para fora da sua vida, se você quiser viver seu sonho. 
Mas para as pessoas que lutam por seus sonhos, a vida tem um significado especial.

Quando você se torna a pessoa certa, o que você faz é se separar das outras pessoas, você começa a ganhar uma certa exclusividade, desde quando você seguia os outros, desde que você era apenas mais um.
Você nunca, nunca será o melhor imitador de pessoas do mundo.
Mas vai ser o melhor que você puder ser. 
Eu desafio você a definir o seu próprio valor.

Que mais ninguém reconhecerá isso, que não serão todos que se juntarão a você, que mais ninguém vai ter a fé, é necessário que você saiba disso. Você não é de uma raça comum. É necessário que você se infiltre entre as pessoas, e atraia-as para seu negócio. Quem está com fome! Pessoas que são imparáveis e irracionais, pessoas que estão recomeçando, para viver a vida do jeito que elas querem, e quem quer mais.

As pessoas que estão vivendo seus sonhos, os vencedores em festa, junte-se a eles! As pessoas que vivem seus sonhos, são as pessoas que sabem que para acontecer, depende delas.

Se você quer ser bem sucedido, se você quer ter e fazer coisas que nunca fez antes, te peço para investir em você.

A opinião de alguém sobre você, não precisa se tornar sua realidade. 
De que você não precisa viver a vida, sendo uma vítima. 
E mesmo que você enfrente decepções, você tem que saber dentro de si mesmo: 
"Eu consigo fazer isso! 
Mesmo que ninguém mais acredite em mim, eu acreditarei em mim mesmo."

É nisso que eu acredito, e eu estou disposto a morrer por isso, ponto final.

Não importa o quão difícil seja,
ou o quão difícil se torne,
eu vou conseguir.

Quero representar ideias, quero representar possibilidades. Alguns de vocês agora, querem avançar para o próximo nível: "Eu quero ser um conselheiro.";"Eu quero ser um engenheiro.";"Eu quero ser um médico.".
Preste atenção no que vou dizer. Você não vai conseguir atingir esse nível, você não vai atingir esse nível económico, até você começar a investir em sua mente. Você não está lendo livros, eu desafio todos vocês a ir às conferências. Eu te desafio a investir seu tempo, eu te desafio a ficar sozinho, eu te desafio a gastar uma hora para conhecer a si mesmo.

Quando você se tornar quem você é, quando você se tornar a pessoa que você foi criada para ser, sendo quem você nasceu para ser, quando você se tornar único, o que você deve fazer é começar a se separar das outras pessoas.

Eu estou desafiando você a ir para um lugar aonde as pessoas não gostem de você ou nem se preocupem com sua existência. Por quê? Por que você não se preocupará em fazê-las felizes. Porque quando você explodir você tentará o próximo nível. Eu preciso que você invista em sua mente. Investir em sua mente.

Se você ainda continuar falando sobre o seu sonho, se você ainda continuar falando sobre o seu objectivo, e você ainda não fez nada, apenas dê o primeiro passo.

Você pode fazer seus pais terem orgulho, você pode fazer sua escola ter orgulho, você pode tocar a vida de milhões de pessoas e o mundo nunca mais será o mesmo de novo.
Por que você fez a diferença!
Não deixe NINGUÉM roubar o seu sonho!

Depois de enfrentar uma rejeição e um "NÃO", ou ter uma reunião e ninguém aparecer, ou alguém disse "pode contar comigo!", mas depois te abandonou. E se nós tivermos uma atitude de sempre tentar novamente, mesmo quando ninguém acredita em você. Você fica perdido de novo, e de novo, e de novo! As luzes são apagadas, mas você ainda acredita em seu sonho, você persiste todos os dias e diz para si mesmo: NÃO ESTARÁ ACABADO ATÉ QUE EU VENÇA!

Você pode viver seu sonho.

Pieter Willem Botha (Paul Roux, Estado Livre de Orange, 12 de Janeiro de 1916 – Wilderness, Cabo Ocidental, 31 de Outubro de 2006), mais conhecido como "P.W." ou Die Groot Krokodil (africâner para "O Grande Crocodilo"), foi primeiro-ministro da África do Sul entre 1978 e 1984 e Presidente-de-Estado (com poder executivo) de 1984 a 1989.

DISCURSO DE BOTHA – 1985

Discurso que se segue foi proferido pelo antigo presidente Sul-africano P.W. Botha a membros do seu Gabinete. - MARTINHO JÚNIOR, Publicado por David G. Mailu no Jornal Sul Africano The Sunday Times, datado de 18 de Agosto de 1985.

“Pretória foi erguida pela mente branca para o homem branco. Não somos obrigados a provar a qualquer um nem mesmo aos pretos que nós somos um povo superior. Já demonstramos de mil
e uma maneiras.

A República da África do Sul que nós hoje conhecemos não foi criada apenas de sonhos.

Nós criamo-la à custa da inteligência, do suor e de sangue. Foram os Afrikaners que tentaram eliminar
os Aborígenes Australianos?

São os Afrikaners que discriminam aos pretos e os chamam Niggers nos Estados Unidos? Foram os
Afrikaners que começaram o comércio do escravo?

Onde o homem preto é apreciado?
Inglaterra discrimina os seus pretos a sua lei de “Sus” está para disciplinar os pretos. Canadá, França, Rússia, e Japão também discriminam.

Por que tanto barulho por nossa causa? Por que nos condenam a nós?

Eu estou tentando simplesmente provar a todos que não há nada incomum no que estamos a fazer –
diferente do que o mundo chamado civilizado está fazendo.

Nós somos simplesmente um povo honesto com uma filosofia clara de como nós queremos viver a nossa própria vida branca.

Nós não fingimos que gostamos de pretos como outros brancos fazem. O facto de os negros parecerem como seres humanos e agir como seres humanos não lhes faz necessariamente sensíveis seres
humanos.

O porco não é porco-espinho e o lagarto não é crocodilo simplesmente porque são idênticos. Se Deus nos quisesse iguais aos pretos, criava-nos a todos de uma única cor e de um intelecto uniforme. Mas criou-nos diferentemente: Brancos, pretos, amarelos, governantes e governados. Intelectualmente, nós somos superiores aos pretos; isso foi provado para além de toda a dúvida razoável ao longo dos anos.

Eu acredito que o Afrikaner é honesto, pessoa temente a Deus, que demonstrou praticamente a melhor forma de estar. Não obstante, é confortável saber que nos bastidores, Europa, América, Canadá, Austrália e todos os outros dizem através de nós o que pensam.

Para relações diplomáticas, nós todos sabemos que língua deve ser usada e onde. Só para provar o meu ponto de vista, camaradas, quem de vocês conhece um país branco que não tenha um investimento ou um interesse na África do Sul? Quem compra nosso ouro? Quem compra nossos diamantes? Quem negoceia connosco? Quem nos está a ajudar a desenvolver outra arma nuclear?

A maior verdade é que nós somos o seu povo e eles são nosso povo. É um segredo grande. A força da
nossa economia é suportada pela América, Grã-bretanha, Alemanha, etc. É nossa forte convicção, consequentemente, que o preto é matéria-prima para o homem branco.

Assim, irmãos e irmãs juntem as mãos e lutemos contra este diabo preto.
Eu apelo a todos os Afrikaners a saírem com meios criativos de travar esta guerra.

Certamente Deus não pode condenar os seus próprios povos que somos nós. Por agora cada um de nós
tem visto praticamente que os pretos não se podem governar.

Dê-lhes armas que eles vão se matar uns aos outros. São bons em nada mais do que fazer barulho, dançar, casar muitas esposas e espojarem-se no sexo.
Vamos todos aceitar que o homem preto é o símbolo da pobreza, da mente inferior, do perder e da incompetência emocional. Não é plausível? Consequentemente que o homem branco é criado para governar o homem preto?

Vamos só pensar no que aconteceria se um dia vocês acordassem com um “Kaffir” sentado no trono! Podem imaginar o que aconteceria às nossas mulheres? Qualquer um de vocês acredita que os pretos podem governar este país? Daí que, nós temos todas as boas razões para deixar todos os Mandelas adeptos e seguidores na prisão, eu penso que nos deviam elogiar por mantê-los vivos, apesar de já possuirmos nas mãos meios para acabar com eles.

Desejo anunciar um conjunto de novas estratégias que devem ser postas em prática para eliminar este “erro” preto. Devemos a partir de agora usar armas químicas.

Prioridade número um,
não deve permitir mais o aumento da população negra, para que não nos arrependamos mais tarde. Tenho a notícia emocionante dos nossos cientistas que desenvolveram um novo material e eficiente. Estou a mandar mais investigadores ao terreno para identificar os quanto mais locais possíveis onde as armas químicas poderiam ser usadas para combater o aumento desta população. O hospital por exemplo é uma boa abertura estratégica, e deve ser inteiramente utilizado. A rede da fonte de alimento deve ser usada.

Nós temos desenvolvido bons venenos que matam lentamente e excelentes destruidores de fertilidade. Nosso medo é somente um, caso esse material voltar-se contra nós! Nas suas mãos podem
começar a usar contra nós, é só parar e pensar quantos pretos trabalham para nós.
Contudo, nós estamos a fazer de tudo para nos certificarmos de que o material permaneça estritamente
em nossas mãos.

Segunda prioridade é 
explorar a vulnerabilidade da maioria de pretos ao dinheiro. Eu reservei um fundo especial para explorar esta faceta. O velho truque de dividir para reinar é ainda muito válido hoje. Nossos peritos
devem trabalhar dia e noite para fazer o homem preto trair os seus mentores. O seu sentido moral inferior pode ser explorado.

E está aqui uma criatura com falta de carácter. Há uma necessidade de nós o combatermos, a
longo prazo para que não possa suspeitar.

O preto médio não planeia a sua vida para além de um ano: esse facto, por exemplo, deve ser explorado.

Meu departamento especial está a trabalhar contra o tempo num projecto de operação a longo prazo.
Estou a fazer também um pedido especial a todas as mães Afrikaner para dobrar sua taxa de natalidade. Pode ser necessário desenvolver uma indústria de crescimento da população, criando centros onde nós empregamos e suportamos homens novos e as mulheres inteiramente brancos para produzir crianças para a nação. Nós estamos investigando também o mérito de aluguer de úteros como meios possíveis de apressar-se o crescimento de nossa população. Por um tempo, nós devemos também activar uma engrenagem muito sofisticada para se certificar de que os homens pretos estão separados das suas mulheres e multas impostas as esposas casadas que gerem crianças ilegítimas.

Eu tenho um comité a trabalhar em torno de um método melhor de incitar os pretos uns contra os
outros e de incentivar assassinatos entre si. 

Os casos de assassinato entre pretos devem merecer uma punição muito leve a fim de os
incentivar. Os meus cientistas desenvolveram uma droga que pode ser usada para efectuar envenenamento e destruição lenta da fertilidade. Trabalhar com as fábricas de bebidas a fim de fabricar bebidas especialmente para pretos, que podiam promover formas de redução da população.

Não é uma guerra em que nós podemos usar a bomba atómica para destruir os pretos; assim sendo, nós
devemos usar a nossa inteligência para isso. O ataque de indivíduo a indivíduo pode ser muito mais eficaz. Os registos mostram que o homem preto morre para ir para a cama com uma mulher branca, está aqui uma oportunidade original


Nosso esquadrão de Mercenários do sexo deve sair e camuflados e infiltrados com lutadores contra o
Apartheid para fazer suas operações de administrar silenciosamente venenos de destruição
lenta da fertilidade.

Nós estamos modificando os esquadrões de Mercenários do sexo introduzindo os homens brancos
que devem ir procurar mulheres pretas militantes e todas outras mulheres pretas vulneráveis. Nós recebemos uma remessa nova de prostitutas da Europa e da América que estão desesperadas e demasiado desejosas de aceitar a missão.

O meu último apelo é que as operações de maternidade nos hospitais devem intensificar-se. Nós não estamos pagando aquelas pessoas para ajudar a trazer bebés pretos a este mundo mas sim eliminá-los no momento do seu nascimento.

Se este departamento trabalhasse muito eficientemente, muito poderia se conseguir. O meu governo
reservou um fundo especial para erguer hospitais e clínicas secretas para promover este programa. O dinheiro pode fazer qualquer coisa para nós.

Enquanto nós o tivermos, devemos fazer o melhor uso dele. Entretanto, meus adoráveis concidadãos brancos, não levem a peito o que o mundo diz e não se envergonhem de ser chamados racistas.

Eu não me chateio por ser chamado de arquitecto e rei do Apartheid. Eu não me transformarei num
macaco simplesmente porque alguém me chamou de macaco. Eu continuarei a ser a vossa estrela brilhante…sua excelência Botha.”
