O Homem de Vitrúvio, de Leonardo da Vinci — James Earle

What's so special about Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man?
With arms outstretched, the man fills the irreconcilable spaces of a circle and a square - symbolizing the Renaissance-era belief in the mutable nature of humankind.

James Earle explains the geometric, religious and philosophical significance of this deceptively simple drawing.

Amar É Deixar Ir

Emocionada...

Passa a ficar obcecado, frustrado e furioso.

 “Deixar livre
é o único modo de amar verdadeiramente”.

Tending the Mind Garden in the Kali Yuga...

The mind is a garden and it is as ordered or disordered as the consciousness which attends it... how do you avoid that when every physical condition comes out of the invisible, whether it is emotionally or mentally charged, it is precipitation out of unseen space. The conditions we encounter and live in come from the collective state of our hearts and minds and whatever may influence them. This is why, when a culture is degenerative and materialism preempts the pull of the higher aspirations, we wind up surrounded by shit. It can be hard to get and expensive shit or it can be cheap and easily acquired shit but it's still shit. The point of all the shit is to take our minds off of what is important. I've said it before and I will say it again because it needs repeating. When the world has fallen into shit worship; granting obeisance to a fecal god that is the offspring of the mind of Freud and those who are amused and fascinated by scatology, it doesn't take long before two whirlpools begin to spin. One sucks downward and one sucks upward and you are already and always closer to the pull of one more than the other and that is determined by where your treasures lie; most of the time your treasures lie.

This is the point and purpose of your present manifest world. It's got nothing to do with what forces win or lose here and it's only peripherally connected to bankers and Satanists; armies and police forces, politicians and religious demagogues, merchants and advertising, entertainment and media. These are the mechanisms of distraction that exist to show the power they possess over your attention and the degree of your fascination and fear. These are the incidentals that perform and play into the disorder of your mind garden.
Discipline is one of those things that is hard to get into but which contains benefits incalculable. A point comes when you can't break your own discipline because it is rooted like a tree, in your mind garden. It will protect and shelter you and depending on the tree, feed you as well.

Everything in your life depends on the state of your mental garden. You must attend to it or it will attend to you in unpleasant ways. Disease and disharmony come out of an unattended garden. Most deaths are stress related because most secondary maladies come out of it. The rest can be attributed to bad diet and lifestyle and often those come out of stress too because stress will make you not pay attention to a great many important things. I always had the love and friendship of the ineffable........... Tend to your garden, before others tend it for you.

Growing is forever... they whispered

"A very long time ago, there were no groves because everywhere was a grove with no roads to bisect and no people to erect stones and fences and bridges.
The trees were very, very young and had much living ahead of them.
The enormity of their lifespan loomed in wooly mists around them, so they stretched out their root fingers and wrapped them around each others’, intertwining and holding very tight.
The ferns found pockets of root fingers where they could nestle in and the moss stretched itself out over the soil and everything became very soft.
The trees grew and made patterns of light and dark on the ground and the vines swirled in to trace the patterns.
Spotted spiders moved back and forth and up and down, making nets to catch the mist, and the mist would linger on the nets in drops that cupped the light.
It was very quiet all the time because the trees needed to focus on their lives.
It is not easy to grow so much, for so long.
Some trees became tired and lay down on the soft ground; others leaned and rested their tops on another.
And when one tree had to stop, another would grow out of it and reach very high into the grey and gold sky.
"Growing is forever" they whispered."

MOVE

MOVE from ARC'TERYX on Vimeo.

"We all try to be busy instead of being alive, busy instead of getting out and breathing, busy sending useless texts instead of walking in the woods with our kids or introducing them to life's joys. We move information instead of simply moving," says Arc'teryx athlete Will Gadd in this ode to action and movement.
Acknowledging how hard it is to carve out time for exercise in our daily lives, Gadd's passionate words remind us how important it is to get outside, breathe hard, and create meaning through movement. After all, as Gadd says, "Life's more fun when you move."

Existential Bummer

"Man is literally split in two: he has an awareness of his own splendid uniqueness in that he sticks out of nature with a towering majesty, and yet he goes back into the ground a few feet in order blindly and dumbly to rot and disappear forever"
-Ernest Becker

Join Jason Silva every week as he freestyles his way into the complex systems of society, technology and human existence and discusses the truth and beauty of science in a form of existential jazz.

New episodes every Tuesday.

"People often ask me about the 'inspiration' behind my videos... and I suppose it really stems from a desire to somehow "capture' or 'bottle' a kind of ecstatic communion with beauty, with awe, with wonder, with melancholy... to create "immortal" moments-- to remind myself to remember the rhapsodies and ecstasies that are often so fleeting... to deconstruct and reconstruct rapture itself.

Alain de Botton's book "Religion for atheists" talks about the need to create mediated experiences for non-believers to experience the transcendent.
Using what Eliade called "technologies of ecstasy", we elicit encounters with something larger than ourselves, epic contexts to shake us out of our stupor...

I suppose for me cinema is the last altar left...
I love "mediated experiences"-- I'm addicted to "aesthetic arrest"-- and summoning these experiences, conditioning these ecstasies thru my videos, is my antidote to existential despair. Its my way of impregnating the world with meanings and significations.
It is how I 'sing" with rapture.

As Coleridge wrote, its about "awakening the mind's attention from the lethargy of custom" and thrust it towards the numinous."
